The BBA – Brazilian Association of Buiatria is a non-profit organization that brings together veterinarians specializing in the health and production of cattle, sheep, goats, and buffalo. Founded in 1980, ABB’s mission is to strengthen the buiatric community, fostering exchange and continuous professional development to enhance technical quality across the meat, milk, leather, and wool production chains. Since 2021, ABB has published the Brazilian Journal of Buiatria (BBJ), its official open-access online journal, offering a wealth of educational material prepared by leading national research groups for professionals across all areas of buiatrics.

In 2028, ABB will have the honor of organizing the 12th International Sheep Veterinary Congress (ISVC), from May 8 to 12, in Pernambuco, Brazil. For the first time, the ISVC will cross the Atlantic Ocean and arrive in the Americas—specifically Latin America—marking a historic milestone for sheep veterinary medicine.

Brazil holds the largest sheep flock in the Americas, with around 20 million head, giving the country strategic relevance in continental sheep production. Production systems vary across regions: in the South, more technified systems predominate, with breeds specialized in meat and wool, intensive management, and cultivated pastures; in the Northeast, extensive systems adapted to the semi-arid climate prevail, with hair sheep breeds such as Santa Inês, internationally recognized for their resilience and productivity. This diversity reinforces Brazil’s leadership and validates Pernambuco as the congress venue, combining science, production, and culture in one setting.

The ISVC 2028 will serve as a global platform for knowledge exchange on sheep medicine, disease prevention, animal welfare, genetics, nutrition, and sustainable production systems. The scientific program will feature:

  • Plenary lectures by internationally renowned experts
  • Thematic sessions on health, reproduction, nutrition, epidemiology, and emerging diseases
  • Oral and poster presentations selected through rigorous peer review
  • Networking opportunities connecting academia, field veterinarians, and industry

Beyond its high-level scientific program, participants will experience Brazil’s cultural diversity and hospitality, making the event a unique integration of science and tradition.

Further details on registration, abstract submission, and sponsorship opportunities will be announced soon.

We warmly invite the global sheep veterinary community to join us at ISVC 2028 and help shape the future of sheep health management.
